Territorial Behaviour and Goldcrest neighbours

A pair of goldcrest (Europe’s smallest bird – more info here) appear to be using the conifers as part of their territory – they nest in conifers so there’s a good chance there will be fledglings from them too at some point.  Took this photo  just a moment ago.

The male blue tit is obviously not pleased to have them around – lots of chasing behaviour.

It’s a Girl!

Our Blue Tit regularly removes its pooh from the nest box – apparently male blue tits never do this.

I had read that nesting usually starts before the end of March so I was starting to think nothing was going to happen this year.  However information at the BTO website suggests that April is the month of nest building.  If she is going to nest she will build the nest entirely on her own during April.

We have observed the blue tit regularly feeding and apparently in the company of 2 other blue tits (suitors maybe) in the evenings before she roosts.  It’s difficult to tell which is which until one of them goes to the nest box.

If she chooses a decent mate he will feed her regularly on the nest when she is brooding.
